Jones handed new Manchester United deal

Richie Jones has been given a new two-year contract by Manchester United Football Club.

The 19-year-old has had an impressive season in the Reds reserve team and featured briefly for the first team in the Carling Cup and FA Cup campaigns.

And the England Under-19 international will now look to push on further after being handed the fresh deal, as he sets his sights on winning a regular spot in the first team squad.

"My new contract gives me the chance to stay at Old Trafford and work with some fantastic coaches and players," said midfielder Jones.

"You can't get any better than learning from Sir Alex Ferguson and the rest of the staff here. Hopefully, I will get a few more run-outs in the first team next season and build on things from there."

Dutch coach advises Ruud to quit United

Marco van Basten believes Ruud van Nistelrooy should quit Manchester United Football Club after the World Cup Finals in order to sign for AC Milan.

Van Nistelrooy is out of favour at Old Trafford and is widely expected to quit the club following a bust-up with manager Sir Alex Ferguson on the final day of last season.

Although he continues to play the diplomatic line that he could still remain in Manchester, it is rumoured his agent is in contact with a number of top clubs around Europe about signing the player.

And van Basten – who has listened sympathetically to the 29-year-old’s predicament – has reportedly told him he could do a lot worse than consider signing for his former club, Milan.

With Andrei Shevchenko set to quit the San Siro for Chelsea this summer, they could be in the market for a top-class replacement – and van Nistelrooy certainly falls into that category.

The United striker has barely stopped finding the back of the net since his £19.1million move to England in the summer of 2001, and would represent a steal at the mooted price of £10million.

Manchester United keen on West Brom keeper?

Polish international Tomasz Kuszczak is reportedly a target for Sir Alex Ferguson

The 24-year-old joined West Brom from Hertha Berlin in July 2004 and after getting his first team chance last season impressed with his displays despite the Baggies' relegation.

Old Trafford boss Ferguson has allowed Tim Howard to go on loan to Everton with a view to a permanent move and although he has promising young goalkeepers such as Ben Foster and Luke Steele on the books, may want a player more ready to challenge Edwin Van der Sar.

If West Brom were to accept a bid for the player, manager Bryan Robson is likely to then move for Liverpool's Chris Kirkland, who was on loan at the Hawthorns last season.

Manchester United boss admits Keane struggle

Manchester United Football Club boss Sir Alex Ferguson is struggling to find an able replacement for Roy Keane.

The Irishman left Old Trafford in November after a decade of ruling midfields up and down the country and in Europe, and the Reds were always going to have difficulty finding a replacement.

A number of named have been linked with a summer move to United, yet Sir Alex has told the clubs’ television channel MUTV that finding a replacement for Keane is not an easy task.

"It's not easy to replace Roy Keane, just as it wasn't when Bryan Robson came to the end of his career," Ferguson said. "We looked for a new Bryan Robson and fortunately we were very lucky to get Roy Keane.

"That scenario is on us again. We've got to get a Roy Keane and we've got to complete that quest in terms of getting that type of player who can influence not just the dressing room but also on the field.

"We have some ideas in mind, maybe not exactly a Roy Keane-type but players who would add to the midfield. One of the benefits of Roy was, even though he was from the Republic of Ireland, it was like he was British, so there was no problem in terms of his culture and the language.

“He was a Manchester lad really, we brought him here from Nottingham at a young age. In the present situation where we're looking for a Roy Keane there is absolutely no-one of that type in the English game.

“There are some good players in the English game but not a Roy Keane-type. So when we look abroad we have to take into consideration that he's not going to be a Roy Keane in terms of his influence in the dressing room because of culture, language, things like that.

"It will be a different type of player but hopefully it will be somebody who has the qualities that we need."

United boss plays down transfer urgency

Although he would like to add to his Manchester United Football Club squad this summer, Sir Alex Ferguson does not believe it is essential.

It is widely accepted that the Reds are in desperate need for midfield reinforcements in time for next season, yet should they fail to land their targets, Ferguson will be happy with what he has available.

"It's always good if you can add to your squad and we're trying to make some progress with the ideas we have," said the United boss.

"It's an important issue, but it's not the key one because I think we have a good squad.

"Player availability can make things difficult. If I don't want to let my good players go, then why should other clubs? Nevertheless anything's possible and we're working hard on some ideas.”

The main target for United is believed to be Lyon midfielder Mahamadou Diarra, who is likely to cost the best part of £20million to lure away from the French champions.
