United boss plays down transfer urgency

Although he would like to add to his Manchester United Football Club squad this summer, Sir Alex Ferguson does not believe it is essential.

It is widely accepted that the Reds are in desperate need for midfield reinforcements in time for next season, yet should they fail to land their targets, Ferguson will be happy with what he has available.

"It's always good if you can add to your squad and we're trying to make some progress with the ideas we have," said the United boss.

"It's an important issue, but it's not the key one because I think we have a good squad.

"Player availability can make things difficult. If I don't want to let my good players go, then why should other clubs? Nevertheless anything's possible and we're working hard on some ideas.”

The main target for United is believed to be Lyon midfielder Mahamadou Diarra, who is likely to cost the best part of £20million to lure away from the French champions.
